Lawn Fertilization
Along with routine grass trimming, to keep your lawn looking its very best and healthy, Revival Lawn Care offers customized fertilization treatments using premium turf-grade fertilizer from Brett Young. Our team of Lawn Care experts recognize that each lawn is unique and will require a different treatment plan to help it stay healthy and free of diseases and weeds. Soil samples can be collected and sent for laboratory analysis in order to best determine the fertilizer treatment that will be the most beneficial to your lawn.
Lime and Iron Application
Lawns thrive in an ideal pH range between 6.0 and 7.0 . Lime applications will help keep the soil pH in balance, while iron applications will help with moss removal. If left untreated, a low pH will stunt root growth and interfere with the uptake of nutrients as well as promote moss growth which thrives in soils with a low pH. The level of acidity originates from three main sources: rain, microbial activity, and nitrogen fertilizers.
Rain
Rain is intrinsically acidic. It carries with it a certain amount of nitric, sulfuric, and carbonic acid absorbed from the atmosphere. Your location makes a difference as well. Rain is great for a rain garden, but rain downwind of a metropolitan area can create a soil pH as low as 4.2. That’s because there is more nitric and sulfuric acid in the atmosphere near a city.
In areas that receive more than 25 inches of rain annually, nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and sodium are leached from the topsoil. That, too, creates acidic conditions. All of which translates to: If you live in a rainy area, your soil may tend to be acidic.
Nitrogen Fertilizers
Nitrogen fertilizers containing ammonium sulfate also lower the soil’s pH. Ammonium sulfate creates acidity when it naturally converts to nitrate in the soil.
Microbial Activity
Microbial activity reduces soil pH levels. The decomposition of organic matter releases nutrients into the soil, producing soil acidity.
As soil microbes decompose plants and other residues, carbon dioxide is produced and stored in the soil.
This reacts with the soil moisture to form carbonic acid and results in increased acidity.
